How EFFECTIVE COMMUNICATION relates to SOCIAL HEALTH?

Picture
SOCIAL HEALTH refers to a person's ability to adapt comfortably, interact socially and act appropriately with others in different settings and situations.

It is about how well you get along with other people and how well other people get along with you. Good Social Health is about forming satisfying interpersonal relationships, whether at work, at home or at play.

Humans are social by nature and a socially healthy person is able to communicate effectively with people from all walks of life. This is vital as positive relationship can affect our overall health and well being POSITIVELY. Socially healthy individuals are mentally and emotionally healthier. They are less likely to develop depression and more likely to have sharper memories.
Unfortunately in our hectic lifestyle many of us do not spend enough time to contemplate or even give a thought on how we can improve our Social Health.

One sure way to improve your Social Health is to improve your communications skills. How we communicate can build or break a relationship.  I’m sure you have heard that ‘the PEN is mightier than the SWORD’.

Whether you are an extrovert or an introvert, whether you work as a professional or excel as homemaker, everyone can benefit from good communication skills. How we communicate helps us to relate to others, build rapport and establish long-term relationships.

Take a SOCIAL HEALTH test

Take the following TEST to find out how well your Social Health scores. Read all the cases listed below and identify the frequency of occurrence:

AT WORK

We spend a significant amount of time at work each week, so it should not be surprising that our relationships with our boss, our colleagues and those who work under us have a big impact on our social and mental wellbeing.

1. You write an email to request for some information. You think it is a simple straightforward request and is expecting to receive an immediate response. However the receiver could not understand your request and you end up sending another ten emails back and forth to clarify before getting what you want.

(1) Never (2) Sometimes (3) Often (4) Always

2. You bumped into your colleague at the hallway, you were friendly and eager to talk but she seems impatient and even offended.

(1) Never (2) Sometimes (3) Often (4) Always

3. Not wanting to be involved in any office politics, you try your best to be nice to everyone in your office, yet people still bad mouth you behind your back.

(1) Never (2) Sometimes (3) Often (4) Always

4. There is one colleague whom you absolutely cannot stand no matter how hard you try. Yet the two of you need to work closely together so you have no choice but to learn to coexist with him.

(1) Never (2) Sometimes (3) Often (4) Always

5. You are a brilliant employee, technically sound and you work well with other colleagues. Your boss loves you but your staffs hate you. Your department turnover is high and none of your staffs stayed longer than 2 years.

(1) Never (2) Sometimes (3) Often (4) Always

6. You think there is limited opportunity in your current position and wants to find a better job. You sent out many applications and received many rejections. You did attend a few interviews but got no offer.

(1) Never (2) Sometimes (3) Often (4) Always

AT HOME

Besides work you try to spend most time with your family. They can be your emotional support and burden at the same time. Behind every successful man or woman is a supportive family.

1. Whenever you try to engage your (teenage) children it usually ends up in argument.

(1) Never (2) Sometimes (3) Often (4) Always

2. It is difficult for children to see the parents’ point of view (or it is difficult for parents to see the children’s point of view)

(1) Never (2) Sometimes (3) Often (4) Always

3. Youngsters these days do not speak in full sentences, they often use terms and acronyms that only millennials themselves understand.

(1) Never (2) Sometimes (3) Often (4) Always

4. You do not think your spouse tries to see things the way you do?

(1) Never (2) Sometimes (3) Often (4) Always

5. Your spouse does not listen actively when you speak

(1) Never (2) Sometimes (3) Often (4) Always

AT PLAY

Besides work and family, you also like to hang out with your circle of common interest friends. They keep you socially alive and boost your ego and self-esteem with their attention and praises.

1. You like to only engage with light-minded people, you do not try to engage people you cannot click with.

(1) Never (2) Sometimes (3) Often (4) Always

2. You are chatty with a small group of friends (less than 3) and tend to keep silence in bigger groups.

(1) Never (2) Sometimes (3) Often (4) Always

3. Whenever you share an idea, your friends get distracted even before you finish.

(1) Never (2) Sometimes (3) Often (4) Always

4. No one takes you seriously

(1) Never (2) Sometimes (3) Often (4) Always

5. People always have to paraphrase what you say a few times before they understand

(1) Never (2) Sometimes (3) Often (4) Always

6. Wonder why you never meet your Mr. Right?

(1) Never (2) Sometimes (3) Often (4) Always

Your Score and what it means

Unfortunately this is one test you DO NOT want to score the highest possible marks. So if your total score for all THREE categories are above 50, you may be in need of some help to raise your Social Health.

While the outcome of each of the above scenarios may not be the result of your action, an awareness of the situation could sometimes help you avert a potential conflict. Many of these situations can have a positive outcome with effective communications skills and the ability to be aware of the appropriate way to respond.

Strong communication skills, empathy for others, a sense of accountability and awareness can have a positive impact to Social Health. Conversely, traits such as being withdrawn, vindictive or being self-centred can have a negative impact on social health.

At SOS, we aim to promote the SOCIAL HEALTH of individuals and the society at large by helping individuals to acquire the following life skill:

1. An ability to communicate effectively with others verbally and through non-verbal communications;

2. Attain a level of emotional intelligence that allows good understanding of other people along with the ability to communicate well in different social settings;

3. Using effective communications tools to live with others in daily harmony as opposed to living in conflict.

Developing and maintaining good SOCIAL HEALTH is important as it allows us to see the good in others, appreciate the value of having them around us and heighten our social wellness and awareness.
